Uma mudança de carros a petróleo para carros elétricos deverá mitigar o problema da poluição atmosférica nas áreas urbanas.
Contudo, o carro elétrico não resolve muitos dos outros problemas associados aos veículos motorizados – congestionamento, perigo, saúde pública, ocupação territorial necessária para estacionamento, e estradas e ruas assoladas pelo tráfego motorizado.
