これは公共インフラの問題です。なぜなら子供たち自身はだいたい何の問題もなく自転車に乗れるからです。大抵の子供は自転車が自由を与えてくれることを見抜いており、魅力を感じています。

子供を連れての自転車移動は難しい、と多くの人が思っているのは、自転車で安全に走れる場所が乏しいからです。自転車利用が盛んな地域には、まず間違いなく安全な走行環境があります。車道とは別のところを走る自転車ルート、物理的に車道から区切られた自転車道、交通の穏やかな生活道路などです。

オランダやデンマークの実例から分かるように、子供は幼い頃からかなりの距離を自転車で走ることができます。子供連れの家族にとっても、一人で出かける子供にとっても、自転車は素晴らしい移動手段です。オランダでは17歳未満の移動のほぼ半分が自転車によるもので、高校生の75%超が自転車で通学しているとのデータもあります。
